Let's face it, dogs need exercise and, as a dog owner, you're obligated to see that he gets it. Exercising with your dog is beneficial for you too!
- Control weight
- Build muscle strength
- Help maintain a healthy heart and respiratory system
- Promote emotional well-being and reduce behavioral problems
Of course the amount of exercise a dog needs depends on his size, age and physical condition. For example, an older dog might only need a leisurely walk in the park while an active young pup might need to chase a Frisbee around for an hour or two.
- Exercise needs to be consistent. Try half an hour every day rather than 2 hours once a week.
- Start slow then build up walking speeds, times and distances.
- Walk on sand, dirt or grass at first until your dog's paw pads harden up.
- If your dog has more energy than you – teach him to “fetch”. A frisbee or tennis ball are great for this.
- Keep him on a leash if you're walking and wear bright or reflective clothing at night.
- Exercise isn't so hot straight after eating as it may upset digestion, or even cause a severe condition called Gastric Dilation and volvulus or “bloat”. Only give him a small amount of water both before and after exercising too.
- Check the weather before you go. Would you walk barefoot in the frost or on burning asphalt?
