Vets & Vaccinations

If you've had a good look at this website you'll see that vet visits are often recommended. In reality, if your dog is healthy, you should only really need to see the vet about once or twice a year for a general check up and vaccinations.

We recommend at least six-monthly visits because, in doggy years, this is roughly the equivalent of a doctor's visit every 3-4 years for us. During these visits the vet can cast an expert eye over your dog's health and vaccinate him against various deadly diseases:

  • Your dog should be vaccinated against parvovirus, distemper, infectious canine hepatitus (adenovirus) and parainfluenza (kennel cough). In some areas Leptospirosis vaccines may also be recommended.
  • Vaccinations can start in puppies as young as 6 weeks (usually at 8-9 weeks).
  • If you're buying a pup or adult dog always ask to see the vaccination records. These are free from the vet whenever a dog is vaccinated.
  • If your dog has no certification your vet can start an immunisation programme from scratch.
