Keeping in shape

Dogs always act like they haven't been fed for days. This harks back to their time in the wild when they ran with the pack and meals were few and far between. Therefore they had to grab a bite whenever they could get it because they never knew when their next meal was coming.

Of course, times are different nowadays and overfeeding your dog just because he looks hungry isn't doing him any favours.

Just like us, dogs can become obese. And, just like us, this means they can suffer from health problems like heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and a reduced life expectancy.

To help your dog start shedding the pounds, reduce his daily calorie intake to 60-65% of optimal (not current) body weight. Use a high fibre diet with a reduced level of digestible carbohydrates.

After a week or two, start following the feeding directions on his pet food package to the letter. Don't give him any other food or treats. He should soon be looking healthier and happier.

Get a smaller dog bowl

When you're busy it's easy to feed the bowl instead of the dog. A smaller bowl will help stop overfeeding.

Watching the waistline

Your dog's ribs are a good place to see whether he's overweight or not. Look at him from above and side on. If his waist tapers in behind the ribcage then he's probably at a good weight. Click here for more information on how to check your dog's body condition, or See your vet if you're unsure.
