Getting Ready

Having a puppy is like having a baby – great fun but full of curiousity! To keep your puppy safe, get down on all fours and see what they see.

Poison! I'll lap that up
Put all kitchen and laundry cleaners away in cupboards, as well as medicines, insecticides and fertilisers, mothballs, antifreeze and other poisonous stuff. And remember, puppies can jump up on high shelves.

Urgh. That plant's given me bad gas
Apricot stones, peach stones, spinach and tomato vines can make your puppy really crook. For a list of dangerous doggie plants, ask your vet.

A cord! I'll pull it
Put out of reach dangling blind cords, loose nails, plastic bags and other tempting objects. Unplug or remove any electrical cords since they can cause severe mouth burns, electrocution and fires – and cover up plug-holes near your puppy's bed.

Whoops, I'm in knots
Puppies can get tangled in ropes or even the plastic from sixpack beverage holders, so cut them up.

Look mum, I'm flying
Don't leave your puppy unsupervised outside until he's got the lay of the land. Puppies can slip through openings or fall off balconies and high decks.

Toilet lids up for boys, down for dogs
Puppies think a toilet bowl is a great place to splash. Keep that lid down or the habit will be hard to break – and embarrassing when friends or family are visiting.

Button down your needles
Keep buttons, string, sewing needles, pins and other sharp objects out of your puppy's reach and don't tie ribbons around your puppy's neck. It could choke if the ribbon catches on something.
