The Chesapeake Bay Retriever originated from two Newfoundlands, “Sailor” and “Canton,” who were rescued from a shipwreck off the coast of Maryland in 1807. A local landowner, Dr. James Stewart, took Sailor to the Eastern Shore, and his progeny on both shores were known as the “Sailor” breed. Outcross breedings with yellow and tan hounds and the Irish Water Spaniel helped to develop the Chesapeake’s color and scent abilities, and coat and zeal in the water, respectively.
